Witness to Hope

Campaign brought parish together

For 73 years, Charles Filice has called St. Mary Cathedral his home.

And, his love for the parish is why he and his wife, Judith, agreed to assist with the diocesan-wide Witness to Hope campaign within the parish.

The couple, along with Karol and Lance Lynch, were co-chairs of the campaign at the cathedral, and their role was to educate and engage parishioners through hosting question-and-answer receptions. The co-chairs also spoke to the congregation during the campaign’s kickoff.

Introducing The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Lansing

The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Lansing was established in 2016 as an important step in planning and providing for the future needs of the Catholic Church in our diocese. Initially, the Catholic Foundation will receive, administer and distribute funds raised through Witness to Hope.

The mission of the Catholic Foundation is as big as the diocese itself. The Diocese of Lansing extends from Hillsdale and Lenawee counties in the south, to Clinton and Shiawassee counties in the north – and includes Ann Arbor, Jackson, Flint and Lansing.

'Extraordinary Moments' Alongside the Challenges

As a child, Msgr. Michael D. Murphy contemplated priesthood. The words of his mother changed his life.

While he paced the upstairs of his house, questioning if entering the seminary was the right move, he said his mother told him to simply check it out, and he could always return home. That advice, he said, was powerful enough that, if approached by someone discerning and looking for guidance, he tells them the same thing.

“I can't imagine doing something different than what I have done. It’s been extremely fulfilling,” he says.

Evangelizing/living the faith

Witness to Hope will provide support for successful parish programs that support evangelization. What types of programs are likely to be supported?

Encounter opportunities such as Alpha, Life in the Spirit seminars, Christ Renews His Parish, ChristLife, Cursillo, High School Kairos and more will be supported. Support also will be given to discipleship group initiatives, parish welcoming formation and leadership training.

For Taylor, 'Evangelizing is a Relationship'

What does it look like to be in tune with God? For Taylor Feldpausch, of Westphalia, being “in tune” is having the ability to open his mind and heart to God.

Every morning, Taylor wakes up an hour before his wife, Jessie, and their four kids. His wife, he says, is a silent force of prayer and a huge support to him. During that hour, Taylor spends his time in prayer and reflects on daily readings and God’s will.

Taylor’s faith impacts his daily life, and he says it is a lens through which he sees everything.

Sean Costello: Educating 'The whole child' in the faith

The cost of a Catholic education can be a a huge barrier; for some, it’s an insurmountable one.

But, through the diocesan-wide Witness to Hope campaign, barriers are being lowered, and the dream of a Catholic education is becoming more attainable by the day.

With the goal of $12.5 million for a Catholic school financial aid endowment, Witness to Hope will radically change support for Catholic schools within the Diocese of Lansing.
